Agar de Asturias was founded in 1987 to produce agar-agar from red seaweed (from the class Rhodoficeas and the genus Gelidium). It is obtained by diving or by collection from the beaches of the Cantabrian region of northern Spain. It is also found along the Atlantic Arch.
Agar de Asturias S.A. is located in an especially good area for collecting Gelidium seaweed, that is, in Llanes on the Eastern coast of Asturias.
